Hello, Michigan Virtual Mentors!

With the end of the semester right around the corner, we have gathered timely information to help you navigate this busy season.

In this Mentor Minute edition:

  • End-of-term reminders, including end dates, final score availability, accessing Exam Passwords, and locating students' final score.

  • Selecting optimal Semester 2 or Trimester 3 course terms by prioritizing the Class End Date and Final Score Available Date, rather than the Start Date.

  • Consider participating in the Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute's online grading practices Research Survey.

End-of-Term Reminders

Please keep the following items in mind as you work to prepare your students for the end of their Michigan Virtual course term:

  • Course End Dates: Please be aware of the end date for each course.   Student course access will end  at 11:59 PM, Eastern Time, on the end date listed in the SLP.   No work can be submitted after the end date.

  • Final Score Availability: You can expect finalized scores no later than five (5) business days after the student's end date.  See Locate a Student's Final Score.

  • Final Exams:  Most courses have a final exam; however, not all do.  Refer to your students' gradebook or  pacing schedule to identify if the course has an exam.
  • Exam Passwords: Mentors are responsible for distributing exam passwords to students and will access passwords from the secured, on-demand Passwords Dashboard in the Brightspace Insights Portal.

💡Enrollment Tip:

Selecting Optimal Sem 2/Tri 3 Course Terms

As students are enrolled in Semester 2 or Trimester 3 Michigan Virtual courses, please consider choosing a term date that closely aligns with when you need the final score, rather than the start date.

Keep in mind that once a course ends, time must be allowed for the teacher grading period and system processing window.  You can expect final scores no later than five (5) business days after the student's published course end date in the SLP.

For a smoother end-of-year experience, we recommend choosing course terms by prioritizing the Class End date and Final Score Available date, rather than the Start Date.  Aligning the enrollment to the desired end date reduces unnecessary tracking, keeps pacing consistent, and helps ensure the final grade is available when you need it.

To support this planning, the Michigan Virtual School Year Calendar has been updated to show when final scores will be available based on student end dates. This allows school partners to select Spring terms that best align with their local reporting and grade-submission timelines.

What about graduating seniors?

We recommend that enrollers choose "Start 1" or an end date that aligns closely with the graduation seniors' end date.  If this is not possible, the local school mentor can manage any early end date needs that arise.

Note that Michigan Virtual instructors cannot “track” individual students’ or schools’ end dates when they differ from what appears in our official systems.  All early end date needs must be initiated and managed at the local school level.

Online Grading Practices  Research Study

We’re inviting mentors, counselors, and administrators like you to take a quick, 5-minute survey to help us learn more about how local school districts interpret and document the scores students receive in their virtual courses. Your experiences and insights are incredibly valuable in helping us identify best practices, address challenges, and support policies that serve students more effectively.

The survey is short and completely voluntary, and your responses will be kept confidential. Just click the link below to get started. Thanks for helping us better understand what’s happening across the state!
